The Basics of WattsUp and Bicycle Training Systems

Computerized Bicycle Training Systems

You first need to understand computerized bicycle training systems and their associated hardware and software to fully understand the purpose of the 'WattsUp' program. These systems incorporate computer hardware into a stationary trainer in which the bicycle attaches to or on the bicycle itself. All of these systems are relatively new to the bicycle industry but are gaining very rapidly in popularity.

The main reason for these new computerized bicycle training systems is the measurement of power. We have had the technology to measure cadence, speed, and other standard measurements for years but power has become mainstream in just this last decade.

"It wasn't until the 1960s that the study of exercise as a science became widespread, and not until the 70's before it began to significantly change the way serious cyclists trained. In the 80's, exercise science made a quantum leap. We learned more about the human athlete in those 10 years than in the previous 80." (The Cyclist's Training Bible by Joe Friel)

Computer technology, hardware, and software have increased our ability to obtain and process measurements. Bicycle computers and their associated hardware and software (like 'WattsUp') are even now quantum leaping. Let's read one more quote from coach Joe Friel.

"There currently are two trends that will effect the direction of training for cycling in the next 10 years. The first is the development of cheaper, yet more sophisticated equipment for measuring the work output and physiological consequences of a ride or race. Within 10 years, nearly everyone will have a handlebar computer that displays more than just speed, distance, time and heart rate. Following races, we will discuss torque, watts and lactate levels as often as speed and distance. We will be able to determine our blood hormone levels and more accurately predict overtraining."

All in all, bicycle training is a never ending, always increasing technology. Professional methods and advanced calculations are now able to be understood and put in place by more and more people. From the person who just wants to stay-in-shape and lose weight to the person who wants to cross the finish line first, bicycle training technology is fun, exciting, and getting better every day!
